The first thing you expect when calling a number is the ringtone, meaning a service provider connects you to the user. But sometimes, the user may have switched off their phone, and you will get a voice message asking you to leave a voicemail.

However, in other cases, you call a user, and the first thing you hear is this number is temporarily out of service. What does that mean?

When the number you have dialed is temporarily out of service, it could mean many things. However, the most common reason is that your number is not connecting to the carrier’s network. This means you cannot reach the person you want to call.

Note: When a number is temporarily out of service, it does not always mean that your service provider has blocked it.

Why is your number temporarily out of service?

Your phone number is temporarily out of service because of the following reasons:

1. Your phone is in Airplane mode

Image: Sten Ritterfeld

When you enable airplane mode on your phone, it cannot connect to a cellular network. That also includes Wi-Fi, hotspot, Bluetooth, and mobile data.

Your number cannot make or receive calls, send text messages, or surf the internet. And when somebody calls the number, they will hear the message – this number is temporarily out of service.

2. The network coverage is poor

Poor network coverage is a common reason a phone number is temporarily out of service. The issue mostly happens when the number you call is in a signal blackspot.

In other words, the geographic area within which the phone is located is experiencing reduced mobile phone signal because it is far away from the nearest cell tower.

As a result, you will experience different issues, including call drop-outs or noise during calls. And if the phone cannot get any signal, your SIM will be temporarily out of service.

In other cases, your number can be temporarily out of service because of a network glitch. Therefore, normal services will only resume if your carrier fixes the glitch.

3. The SIM card has expired

Typically, SIM cards remain active for at least 60 days when not in use, depending on the carrier. After 60 days, the number becomes inactive.

However, most telecom companies offer a grace period of between 30 and 60 days. The grace period allows you to top up the number to prevent the SIM card from expiring.

If you do not top up the number, your SIM card will expire and prevent you from making or receiving calls, including emergency calls. Thus, your phone will be temporarily out of service until you contact your carrier for further assistance.

4. Your carrier has blocked the number

Your mobile carrier can block your number because of several reasons. For example, they can block it from accessing the cellular network if you have reported your phone lost or stolen and requested them to block it.

They can also block it to prevent fraud or fraudulent people from activating and using the number. If you have not registered your number, as a requirement, the company will block it until you register.

Once your carrier blocks your number from the network, it cannot make or receive calls. And if a person calls, they will hear that the number is temporarily out of service.

5. Your SIM card has a registration error

Image: freepik

You may notice that although you have used your SIM card for a while, your phone shows a ‘SIM card registration failed’ error message.

The issue happens when your device cannot successfully read the data from the SIM card. Therefore, it cannot communicate with your mobile or cellular network.

A SIM card error can occur if there is physical damage to it or you drop your phone. Now, since the phone cannot read the data from your SIM card to communicate with your carrier, the number will be temporarily out of service until you fix it.

You can fix it by replacing the SIM card or registering your number.

6. Your carrier has deactivated the number

You can terminate your service with a mobile carrier as a mobile subscriber. You can also transfer your number to a different cellular carrier.

Therefore, your carrier will deactivate your number and make it temporarily out of service. After a while, your carrier can make the number available if it recycles it and assigns it to a new subscriber.

Can you make your phone number temporarily out of service?

You have limitations for making your number temporarily out of service. However, you can achieve this by doing the following.

Enable airplane mode on your phone.

Ask your carrier to block the number temporarily.

Avoid topping up your number for at least 60 days.

You can also visit an area with poor cellular coverage to make it temporarily out of service.

Image: taylor_grote

Can you view a list of out-of-service numbers?

In some jurisdictions, cellular carriers provide copies of deactivation reports. The purpose is to help subscribers clean up their lists.

Typically, the report contains a list of phone numbers the carriers have deactivated on their networks. Therefore, the only way to view a list of out-of-service numbers is to contact your mobile carrier.

Is your phone number back in service?

So, what does it mean when a number is temporarily out of service? Ideally, your number is not connecting to the carrier’s network.

The cause of the problem could be poor network coverage, an expired SIM card, a deactivated number, or a SIM card registration error.

Also, if you enable airplane mode on your phone, the device will not connect to the cellular network, thus making your number temporarily out of service.

Finally, if your carrier has blocked your number to prevent fraud, it will temporarily be out of service.

Have you ever dialed a number and then got the message that it was an unallocated phone number?

Or, if not, imagine for a moment you got a call from an unallocated phone number. It sounds quite suspicious at first.

The first question that comes to mind is, why would someone use an allocated phone number to contact you?

In this article, we shall discuss this mysterious phone number error, what it means, and how you can go around the notification.

What is the meaning of “the number you have dialed is unallocated?

There are two instances when you can get a “the number you have dialed is unallocated” error;

When the operator has not assigned the phone number.

The operator has assigned the carrier network provider the number, but the provider has not assigned it to a user.

This error means that the number in question is not registered under any user or that an operator has not assigned it to a specific network provider.

So, why would someone use an unallocated phone number? The simple answer is to save on cost.

Yes, some network providers will permit businesses to use such numbers without paying the subscription fee.

Image: taylor_grote

But unfortunately, spammers, protocols, scammers, and telemarketers who may occasionally have ill intentions will take advantage of such provisions and start phoning people with such numbers.

Note that this differs from the temporary phone numbers generated by the Burner app.

These are some of the causes of ‘the number you have dialed unallocated;

1. If you have an incorrect number

It is obvious to associate unallocated and unassigned messages with spammers, protocols, scammers, and telemarketers. But sometimes, they can be a result of dialing the wrong numbers.

You can envisage a case where someone gave you their number, but while saving, you missed or added a digit without noticing.

When you dial such a number, you will get the number you have dialed is an unallocated error.

2. Fraudulent numbers

There are cases where you may have a phone number in your contact list. Fraudsters take it because the owner canceled the number for whatever reason. They’ll use it for calls or to send anonymous texts.

When you try to call such a number, you will get the unallocated and unassigned message error.

3. Failure to pay your phone bills at the right time

If you don’t pay your phone bills on time, your network provider may cancel your subscription plans. In this case, you may end up on the unallocated phone numbers list.

Similarly, you may have several people who could not pay their phone bills on time and canceled their subscription plans.

You may see the error when you call them.

4. Temporary problems with the network

When the network is down, it can lead to the problem of the ‘number you have dialed is unallocated’ error.

So if you dial a number and the person is in a place with temporary network issues, you may get messages like the mobile network is unavailable.

The same case applies to you if a person was calling you and you were experiencing network issues.

5. Spoof numbers

There are cases where someone may call you, and you could not pick up for another reason. Then, later, when you try to call them back, you get the unallocated phone number message.

You may also notice that the person was calling you from a landline or, even worse, a number without a caller id. Unfortunately, that means you cannot call them back to clarify.

Those are the numbers referred to as spoofed numbers. In most cases, they are used by scammers, protocols, spammers, and telemarketers.

Such numbers are generated by software, and then they’re edited. So it’s always good to treat the number as spam and block them to avoid further damage.

One common example is the text mail subscriber number.

How to fix the unallocated phone number error

There are several ways to solve this error. Here is a list of some possible solutions;

1. Delete the contact number and retype it

As we have mentioned, receiving the unallocated phone number error message is possible if you have the wrong number saved in your contact list. It can be as simple as adding or omitting just one digit.

To correct such an error, it would be to confirm the number in the question and then retype the correct number.

This will save you a lot of unnecessary headaches in the future.

2. Confirm Google Voice settings

Sometimes, the error of the number you dialed is unallocated and triggered by the Google Voice settings, disabling your phone number without your knowledge. However, there is a simple way to fix this error with Google Voice settings.

Go to Google Voice settings and ensure your number appears at the top.

Search for your mobile operator, and type your phone number.

Wait for a Google Voice activation message and follow the instructions.

3. Contact customer care support

If you are sure you have paid all your bills, yet you keep getting the unallocated phone number error, you can call support.

Every carrier network provider has a team of customer care support to fix such issues.

At least after explaining to them, they should be able to give you a workable solution on what you can do. For example, they might need to activate your number if it was deactivated for whatever reason.

4. Block the phone number

If you notice that you have received a call from a spoofed number, chances are high that it’s from a scammer.

Some scammers will even make calls with no caller id, making it difficult to retrieve their details.

This means the caller does not want to be identified for obvious reasons; they may intend to scam you. For your safety, it would be best to block the number and protect the integrity of your data.

AT&T is undoubtedly the largest telecommunications provider in the world. One of their most convenient services is the voice mail feature which allows callers to record voice messages if a recipient cannot pick up the phone.

This way, you manage to keep in touch with people despite being busy. Lately, users have reported that they keep getting the voicemail is unavailable error when trying to receive or download their voicemails.

The good news is that you can quickly troubleshoot and solve the aforementioned problem even without contacting customer care.

3 ways to fix your AT&T voicemail feature when it isn’t working

Let’s take a look at the most effective ways of fixing the voicemail feature on AT&T when it isn’t working:

1. Check the wireless coverage and signal strength

To receive and download voice mail, you need to be in a place with strong signal and wireless coverage.

Here is how to check the signal strength

Switch off your phone for a few seconds before switching it on

Place a call to 611

If the test goes through, press 1 to access your voice mail

If the call does not go through, go to AT&T wireless coverage site and confirm whether the area you are in has wireless coverage

If you have wireless coverage and the voice mail still won’t download, press 1 to listen to the message.

2. Reset your voicemail password

One of the fastest ways to resolve the voicemail service is not available problem is to reset the password. If AT&T gets a slight impression that your password safety might be compromised, they cease sending emails to your voice box. In this case,

Confirm that you are in the AT&T wireless coverage area

Sign in to your AT&T account by keying in your user ID and password

Once you are on the homepage, click on the wireless option

Click on my devices & add-ons and select the device with the problem

Click on manage my device

Scroll then click on device options and settings

Click on reset voice mail password and follow the instructions you will be given.

3. Reset the network settings

Sometimes when AT&T voicemail is not working on an iPhone, it is challenging to pinpoint the exact thing causing the problem. Therefore, resetting the whole network is the only viable choice.

Tap on the settings icon

The Do Not Call List is a registry of phone numbers that prevents telemarketers from calling their owners.

If you have been receiving annoying calls from companies that want to sell you their products or services, you can contact the National Do Not Call Registry of the Federal Trade Commission to register your number. Once you complete your no-calling list registration, no business entity will call you to market itself or sell you an item.

Although you can put your number on the National Do Not Call List Registry, a telemarketer must have its own “No Call List,” even if you do not register.

However, the organization will only add your phone number if you tell them to add it to its database or to stop calling you. They face substantial fines if they fail to comply with the rules and end up contacting you.

Is there a Do Not Call List for cell phones?

FTC only has one National Do Not Call Registry. It does not have a “no call list for cell phones.” However, the Registry allows you to register your home and cell phone numbers.

After registration, you will notify telemarketers that you do not want to get unsolicited marketing calls from them.

It is free to register both your mobile or home phone number. Here is how to stop telemarketers from calling your cell phone.

Visit donotcall.gov.

Click on Register Your Phone.

Select Register Here.

Follow the registration steps by entering up to three phone numbers that you do not want telemarketers to use to call you. Also, provide your email address.

Click Submit.

If there are errors, check for them, and then click Register.

Open your email address and click on the link sent to you by the registry. You have 72 hours to complete the registration. Ensure to provide the correct email address to make the registration seamless.

You can also register by phone number.

Call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236).

Ensure to call from the phone number you want to register with FTC’s Do Not Call Registry.

It is free to call 1-888-382-1222 to register your cell phone number.

Does the National Do Not Call List work?

Although the National Do Not Call List works to some extent, it does not work 100% of the time. It is impossible to prevent all unwanted calls.

That is because the Registry does not stop specific organizations from calling you. Even if you register your number, this will not apply to political parties, charity establishments, and other entities that are conducting a survey.

Furthermore, expect to receive a call from debt collectors. Your number may also be on the Registry, but a company can continue calling you to sell you a product or service.

That can happen if you have an established business relationship with the company that has been going on for the last 18 months.

In other words, you rented or bought something from the company in the last 18 months. Or, you have given it written permission to call you.

Why do you still get calls while on the Do Not Call List

The following are reasons why Do Not Call List is not working on your phone number:

You are receiving a political call.

It’s a charity call.

You’ve worked, purchased, or rented the company’s product in the last 18 months.

You are receiving a call from a debt collector.

You called a telemarketer in response to an ad on TV, in a magazine, on the internet, or in other media.

It’s a call about your treatment, case management, or health benefits.

You are getting spam calls.

Sometimes you may also be getting a pre-recorded call. Even in that case, the telemarketer must have prior written consent from you.

How to check if a number is on the Do Not Call List

Here is how you can verify if your number is on the Do Not Call List:

Go to donotcall.gov/verify.

Enter the phone number(s) you would like to verify.

Provide your email address too.

Click Submit.

Confirm whether you have provided the correct details.

You will receive an email with the information you need.

Alternatively, call 1-888-382-1222 to verify whether your number(s) is on the Registry.

How long does a number stay on the Do Not Call List?

After registering your home or cell phone number with the Registry, it will prevent telemarketers from calling you as long as it remains registered. In other words, your registration does not expire, even if you placed the number with the Commission years ago.

The only exception is when the number is either reassigned or disconnected. You can also ask FTC to remove it, thus allowing marketers to sell you their products or services.

What happens if you call someone on the Do Not Call List?

If a telemarketer calls you and you have:

Placed your number on the Do Not Call Registry.

Given prior notice to not receive sales calls.

Do not have an established business relationship with the telemarketer.

In any of the three instances above, the telemarketer may be liable for violating the Do Not Call rules.

But there are instances where a telemarketer can call your phone number even if it is on the Registry. In that case, the individual or company must:

Not ask for any payment in advance.

Inform you they are making a sales call on behalf of a charity.

Give you the name of the charity or seller.

The goods or services it is selling

If you think an entity has violated your telemarketing rights, you can report it to the FTC to allow them to take legal action. Call 1-888-382-1222, TTY 1-866-290-4236, or go to www.donotcall.gov to file a complaint.

In conclusion

If you do not want telemarketers to contact you, register your phone number with the National Do Not Call List. It is a registry that prevents sales agents or companies from calling you and selling you their goods or services.

In case they fail to comply, you can report them to the FTC by calling 1-888-382-1222, TTY 1-866-290-4236, or visiting donotcall.gov and filing your complaint.
