7 best walkie-talkie apps that connect to real walkie-talkies

Tim Vickers

Walkie-talkie apps are becoming increasingly popular because they allow you to communicate with others in real-time. The apps work like traditional walkie-talkies and are particularly useful when quick but short vocal communication is necessary.

These walkie-talkie apps are available on both Android and iOS platforms. However, they are not all created equal. Some offer more features than others, while some are more reliable than others.

Therefore, if you want an app that connects to walkie-talkies and offers prompt communication in emergencies or construction sites, here are seven apps worth trying.

1. Apple Watch Walkie-talkie

  • Developer: Apple Inc.
  • Pricing: Free
  • Website: apple.com

The Walkie-Talkie app is a feature on the Apple Watch that allows users to connect with another user with a compatible Apple Watch. It works like a real walkie-talkie, where you press a button to talk and release it to listen when ready for a reply.

The app offers a fun and quick way to communicate with others. If your friend has their Apple Watch and turns on the Walkie-Talkie, they will receive alerts anytime you want to talk to them.

Why we like it

  • It offers an easy way to connect with friends and family.
  • It is always on, so you can quickly contact someone without making a phone call.
  • It has an unlimited range, making it easier to connect with contacts globally.
  • You do not need to answer calls to start a conversation.

What we do not like

  • Unavailable in all regions.
  • Only available for Apple Watch Series 1 and later devices.

Although it is only available on the Apple Watch, it is the best walkie-talkie app without the internet because it works through Wi-Fi or cellular on the Apple Watch.

2. Marco Polo

  • Developer: Joya Communications
  • Pricing: Free and Premium
  • Website: marcopolo.me

Technically, Marco Polo is a video-based instant messaging app. It allows you to send video messages to your friends and loved ones.

However, many users often refer to it as a video walkie-talkie because its face-to-face messaging is similar to the walkie-talkie style. The app has many features that enhance communication, including video and voice filters and instant emoji reactions.

Why we like it

  • All connections are via the phone number, making the app safer.
  • Users can create group chats, and anyone in the group chat can see the chat history.
  • You can add text and drawings to a video.
  • Users can change the sound of their voice in videos.

What we don’t like

Although the premium app has more features, it will cost you $5 for a Plus plan or $10 for a Plus Family plan billed monthly.

Hello, this message is for Tim Vickers regarding the article:

“7 best walkie-talkie apps that connect to real walkie-talkies
November 3, 2023 by Tim Vickers”

I’m interested in #4, the Two Way walkie talkie app. Specifically, I’d like to give my aunt a real walkie talkie for Christmas and install an app like Two Way on my iPhone so my aunt can just pick up the real walkie talkie, press the talk button and connect with me instantly via the walkie talkie app.

I just haven’t been able to find any contact details for the developer and I just want to know if there is an affordable real walkie talkie I can buy for my aunt that is compatible with the Two Way app. I’ve been trying to figure out how to reach the developer but am wondering now if they’re actually still active?

Any additional info would be much appreciated, thank you and Happy Holiday Season!

    Kenny
