However, you cannot use the card to shop online at Walmart or other online stores. Below is everything you need to know about the WIC program, how to use the card with your Walmart app, and situations in which you can use your benefits to shop at Walmart stores.
How to add a WIC card to Walmart app
You can use your WIC on the Walmart grocery app and use the benefits when shopping at Walmart. Below is a look at how to add your benefits card to Walmart’s payment methods.
- Launch the Walmart app and log into your account.
- Tap on the Account icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Tap on Payment methods.
- Select Add a Payment Method.
- Choose WIC as the payment type.
- Enter your WIC card details.
- Select Save Card.
Once saved, you can use your WIC benefits when shopping at Walmart.
Can you use a WIC card when shopping online?
While shopping with your benefits cards at several retail stores across the U.S. is possible, you cannot use WIC online. However, this might not be the case for very long.
In February 2023, the U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture proposed modernizing the WIC program to allow participants to shop for groceries online.
If the proposal is implemented, you can use your benefits to shop at online retail stores like Walmart.
Having your groceries delivered would also save you the hassles of traveling several miles to locate authorized in-person retail stores where you can use your WIC card.
How to use the WIC card on the Walmart app
While you cannot shop with WIC online, you can use WIC on the Walmart app to pay for your purchase at authorized Walmart stores. To do this:
- First, ensure you have added your WIC card to your Walmart app.
- Shop at Walmart and ensure the items you have picked are WIC-supported.
- Go to any of the checkout lanes and have a cashier scan your purchases
- Open the Walmart app and select the Walmart Pay
- Scan the QR code at the cashier’s register using your phone to pay for the purchases.
- Once the payment is accepted, a confirmation will appear on your Walmart app.
Can you use WIC to self-check out Walmart PA?
You can use your WIC card to shop and self-checkout at any authorized Walmart store. Below is a step-by-step look at the process:
- Download the MyWIC app and use the scan feature when shopping to ensure the items you have picked are supported.
- Once you are done shopping, go to one of the self-checkout lanes and scan all your purchases.
- Once all items are scanned, press the Pay button on the checkout register.
- Open your Walmart app and launch Walmart Pay.
- Scan the QR code on the self-checkout register using your phone’s camera.
- Once the transaction is completed, a confirmation message will appear on your Walmart app.
NOTE: While you can shop for WIC and non-WIC items simultaneously, you can only pay for the WIC-supported items using your benefits card. Therefore, you must use another payment method for non-supported items.
However, you can ask a Walmart customer service representative to help remove any non-WIC items you mistakenly included in your cart during self-checkout.
