Twitch audio is not working? Here’s the fix

Twitch is arguably the most popular video game streaming site due to its seamless user experience. However, even though it has many good things going on, Twitch users have recently reported audio problems, be they distorted sound or no audio at all.

There are many probable reasons why your Twitch stream audio is not working. Some will require a professional to solve, while others result from your device’s settings.

  • You have enabled a third-party audio enhancement tool for your speaker.
  • You accepted corrupted cookies while opening the browser hosting your Twitch account.
  • Your PC is on mute. If you use a headset, your PC will often mute itself and take it off without pausing the stream.
  • The audio drivers on your PC are out of date and in need of an upgrade.
  • Your cable connection is loose, especially if you use an external speaker or microphone.
  • You have disabled the option to play sound on web pages on your browser.
  • Your PC’s hardware is faulty.

How to troubleshoot when audio is not working on Twitch

Since the exact cause of this issue differs from one user to the next, try out these troubleshooting tips in order and stop when the audio starts working.

1. Turn off Audio Enhancement features

Most audio enhancement software in the market is badly crafted; hence they often cause audio distortion.

Here is how to disable it:

  1. Click on the Windows icon and open Settings
  2. Tap Systems, followed by Sounds.
  3. Click on More sound settings.
  4. Go to the Playback tab and right-click on the Output device.
  5. Click on Properties.
  6. Click on the Enhancement tab and Disable all enhancements.

2. Check your Internet properties

Twitch might have no audio because your default webpage setting is to disable audio on new web pages.

  1. On your PC’s Taskbar, key in Internet Options and press Enter.
  2. Click on Advanced.
  3. Click on Multimedia listings.
  4. Confirm that the Play sounds in the web pages checkbox is marked. If not, click on it to enable sounds.
  5. Click Apply to save the new settings.

3. Clear browser cookies and unwanted cache

Your browser automatically stores cache data to offer you a seamless user experience. But, sometimes, the cache gets corrupted, leading to unwanted problems.

Here is how to resolve the issue.

  1. Launch the browser you are using, say Google Chrome.
  2. Click on the three dots at the top right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Select Privacy and Security.
  5. Select Clear browsing data
  6. Select the time range within which you want the data to be deleted. Preferably choose All time.
  7. Check the following boxes: Browsing history, Download history, Cache images and files, and cookies and other site data.
  8. Relaunch the browser and try opening Twitch to see if the problem has been resolved

4. Update the PC’s Audio drivers

Considering Technology is constantly evolving, it is advisable to always update your audio drivers for maximum performance. Below is how to perform the task at hand.

  1. Click on the Windows icon.
  2. Click on the Settings icon.
  3. On the top right hand of the screen, click on Windows updates.
  4. Click on Advanced options.
  5. Scroll down to Additional Options and click Optional updates.
  6. Click on the Audio driver updates you need and start the download.

Method B

  1. Go to the Windows search bar, type in Device manager, and then click on it to open.
  2. Double-click on Audio, Inputs, and Outputs.
  3. Right-click on Speaker/Headphones.
  4. Click on Update driver.
  5. Click Browse and Windows will search the internet for the most compatible driver for your device.

Alternatively, you can manually search for the website of the manufacturer of your audio device and check for any updated drivers.

5. Additional tips when your Twitch audio is not working

Sometimes, the audio problem on Twitch might result from glitches from the Twitch website or your PC itself. In this case, any of the fixes below might work for you.

  1. Close any open pages and reboot your PC.
  2. Please close your browser and, by extension, Twitch, then relaunch them.
  3. Confirm that the cables connecting your mic or external speaker are working fine.
