Scanning the QR code on your Wyze camera is part of the setup process, which allows you to link your camera to the Wyze app. It is a seamless process, which should take about 5 seconds. Therefore, it can be frustrating when your camera refuses to scan the QR code.

There are several reasons your Wyze cam v3 won’t scan the QR code. They include an expired QR code, camera view obstruction, or the code not being visible. You might also be holding the QR code too close or too far away from the camera.

Below, I have compiled all the information on properly scanning the QR code. I have also included troubleshooting tips and fixes you can use to solve the issue when your camera refuses to scan the code.

How to scan a QR code on Wyze cam?

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to scan a QR code on your Wyze cam:

Unbox the camera and power it using the provided USB cable and power adapter.

Go to your smartphone and download the Wyze app for either Android or iOS.

Launch the app and log in with your account details. Alternatively, register a new account if you don’t have one.

Go to the Wyze cam dashboard and tap on the + New Device tab

In the Add Device window that pops, select the type of Wyze device you want to add (Wyze Cam, Wyze Cam Pan, etc.). You will then be taken to a Wyze Cam Setup window.

Go back to your camera and press the setup button on the camera’s underside as indicated on the phone’s setup window. You will hear a sound prompt giving you the go-ahead to connect.

Tap Next on the Wyze Cam Setup window, enter your WiFi network details, and tap Next to proceed. The app will generate a QR code for your camera.

Place your phone near the camera (within its view) to scan the code, after which you can follow the onscreen instructions on your phone to complete the setup.

Why is Wyze cam not scanning the QR code?

You might have trouble scanning the QR code with your Wyze cam for several reasons. Below is a look at them:

If the QR code is not fully visible to the camera

If the QR code is being obstructed, for example, the camera’s protective film, dirt on the camera lens, cracked phone screen, glare due to too much brightness, etc.

Moving the phone too much when attempting to scan.

A glitch in the Wyze camera

Expired QR code

How to fix a QR code that won’t scan on the Wyze camera?

If you are having trouble scanning the QR code on your Wyze camera, the troubleshooting tips and solutions below can help you fix the issue:

1. Check that the QR code is not expired

For security reasons, Wyze cam QR codes have a limited lifespan, five minutes after they have been generated. If you try to scan the code after that, it will not work.

Therefore, if you are having a problem scanning the code, you should first go to your Wyze cam app and generate a new code. Then, make sure to scan this code immediately before it expires.

2. Make sure the camera lens is not dirty or being obstructed

Obstructed camera lens view is another reason you might have trouble scanning the QR code. The obstruction can be from dirt on the lens or something else like the camera’s protective film.

Therefore, before attempting to scan the code, make sure you remove the protective film covering the camera lens. If you suspect the lens is dirty, clean it using a microfiber towel or a soft cloth that will not scratch the lens.

3. Clean your phone screen and adjust the brightness

A problem with scanning the QR code might also originate from your phone’s screen. For example, a dirty or cracked screen might obstruct some parts of the QR code, making it unscannable.

On top of that, your phone’s screen might interfere with the camera view if the screen’s brightness level is too high, which will cause a glare.

Therefore, to fix the issue, start by wiping your phone’s screen to ensure there are no dirt smudges obstructing the QR code. It would help if you also lowered the brightness level, but not too much so that the code is not visible.

Switch to another mobile device with a good screen if your phone’s screen is cracked. Alternatively, you can take a screenshot of the QR code and send it to another phone or even your computer and scan the code from there.

4. Adjust the scanning distance and hold your phone steady as you are scanning

The scanning distance is another reason that might be causing your camera not to scan the QR code. If you are too near the camera, parts of the QR code might not be visible.

On the other hand, if you are too far away, the camera will not sense the code. The proper distance for scanning is about five to eight inches from the camera screen.

Therefore, slowly adjust the distance you are holding the phone from the camera and see if the code scans.

Also, while attempting to scan, ensure that you hold your phone steadily, as movements might cause the camera not to sense the code.

5. Restart your Wyze camera

Software or firmware glitches are another possible reason your Wyze cam pan doesn’t read the QR code. The good news is that most of these glitches are minor and temporary; hence you can fix them with a simple restart of your camera (power cycle).

To reset the camera, unplug it from the power source at the outlet or the camera power inlet port. Let the camera rest for about 30 seconds to a minute, then power it back on and try scanning the code again.

6. Reset your Wyze camera

If none of the above solutions works, resetting your Wyze camera to the factory settings is the next best solution. Doing this will usually clear any issues in the camera causing it to malfunction.

To reset your Wyze camera:

Make sure your camera is connected to a power supply

Press and hold the setup button for about 20 seconds (about 10 seconds for Wyze cam v2, Wyze Cam Pan v1, Wyze Cam v3, and Wyze Cam Pan v2

The camera will start flashing when the reset is complete, and you can try scanning the code again.

NOTE: You might have to generate a new code if the one you are using is expired.

Here’s a video about resetting the camera using its app.

Scan the QR code on Wyze Cam

You cannot complete setting up your Wyze cam without scanning the QR code generated on your phone by the Wyze app. Therefore, a camera that refuses to scan the code is the worst thing you can experience during the setup process.

Luckily, with the information above, you can easily identify and fix why the code is not scanning.

Do you use a Wyze Cam security camera in your home? How can you access cloud storage recordings captured by the device?

Wyze Cam is a smart home security camera that you can use to monitor your property when you are away.

It is smaller than most other security cameras; thus, you can attach it to any surface in your home – walls, doors, countertops, and tabletops.

One of the camera’s features is cloud recording, where “events” are stored in cloud storage, where you can access and review them.

So, how do you go about accessing the Wyze Cloud storage? It’s simple! You can access Wyze cloud footage through the Wyze app on your smartphone.

This detailed guide explains how to set up and access cloud recordings on your Wyze cam. We’ll also provide important information about the Wyze home security camera and cloud storage.

How to set up Wyze cloud recording?

To access Wyze Cloud recording, you must first activate the recording feature for your camera.

You can do this on your Wyze app through these steps:

Launch the Wyze app on your smartphone. (Make sure that the camera you want to record to the cloud has been set up on your app).

Go to Account on the app’s dashboard (located at the bottom left corner).

Under the Account menu, select the Wyze Services option.

Under the list of enabled services, tap on Complete Motion Capture. A new window will appear where you can choose the Wyze Cam you want to record to the cloud.

Find the camera you want to record under the list of available cameras and click on the + icon to enable cloud recording.

Repeat the process for all the cameras you want to record (if you have more than one).

With your camera(s) cloud recording enabled, events (motion detections) will be recorded and saved to cloud storage, where you can access them later.

How to access Wyze cloud recordings?

How can you access and view recordings saved to your Wyze cloud storage? Below is a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

First, launch the Wyze app on your smartphone and go to the dashboard.

Tap on the events tab (from the menu options at the bottom of the screen).

In the events window, select the specific date for the recording you want to view.

After selecting the date, choose between different events (person, motion, or cameras)

All your saved recordings in the cloud will be available in the events tab. To view a recording, tap on the one you want for the video to start playing.

NOTE: Wyze cam cloud storage offers recordings of events that have already taken place. Therefore, your Wyze cameras do not need to be online for you to view the recordings.

Can you download videos from Wyze Cloud?

With the above information, you can view Wyze videos online after they have been saved to cloud storage.

But can you download them and view them later online? What if there is an important recording you want to save for later use?

Yes, you can download recordings saved in the Wyze cloud storage. To download them:

Go to the events tab on your Wyze app

Bring up the video clip you want to download

Tap on the clip twice – the second time, an option to save (download) or share will appear.

Tap on the download/save option – the clip will download to the local storage of your mobile device, from where you can access it.

Is Wyze cloud storage free?

You can use the Wyze cloud storage for free if you choose the Basic or Cam Plus Lite plan. However, it has its own limitations.

To give you a better idea of storage options, Wyze offers three different packages for its cloud storage service:

1. The Wyze basic plan

The Wyze basic plan is a free package.

Under this plan, the Wyze Camera detects and saves events in the cloud storage as snapshots. On top of that, each recorded event has a waiting period of five minutes.

2. The Wyze Cam Plus Lite plan

The Wyze Cam Plus Lite plan is a Wyze cloud storage subscription package that uses a pay-what-you-want billing strategy.

You select the amount of money you want to pay for the service, starting from $0. Therefore, it is a free service, but you can pay for it.

Under the Wyze Cam Plus Lite plan, your camera detects and records events to the cloud storage, with each video clip being limited to only 12 seconds.

On top of that, there is a five minutes waiting period before a new event can be recorded.

3. The Wyze Cam Plus plan

The last package offered by Wyze is the Wyze Cam Plus plan. It is a premium package that offers cloud recordings of unlimited length.

On top of that, there is no waiting period between event detection, which allows for back-to-back recording. The Wyze cloud storage price for the Cam Plus plan is $1.99 per month, billed annually.

Does Wyze Cam offer offline storage?

Wyze offers cloud recording, where your camera saves events to the cloud. But is there a way to record these events offline?

Yes, you can record offline on your Wyze Cam.

Each camera has a MicroSD card slot, where you can install your card for offline recording.

You can activate offline recording for your camera on the Wyze app through these steps:

Insert your MicroSD card into the camera’s slot (ensure you format it before inserting it if it is not new). Once inserted, the camera will make a “ding” sound, indicating that it has accepted the card.

Launch the Wyze app and go to the live stream of the camera you want to record.

Tap on Settings, then select Advanced.

Under the Advanced Settings menu, slide the toggle switch next to Record to MicroSD Card to activate offline recording.

Select how you want to record your footage – continuously or events only.

Your Wyze Cam is not set to record to the MicroSD card. Note: you can simultaneously record both to the cloud storage and the MicroSD card.

Wrapping up

Wyze Cam is a great home security service that allows you to monitor your home even when you are away.

With the Wyze Cam cloud recording, your camera(s) saves all the important events, which you can review later through the Wyze app.

You can use three cloud storage plans – one free, one where you pay what you want, and the other premium.

Aside from cloud storage, you can also record events on a MicroSD card. If you want, you can even use both cloud storage and offline recording to save important events.

Wyze Cam is a leading smart home camera, that allows you to monitor your house remotely through your phone.

But if you don’t want to use your smartphone, is there a way to watch a Wyze Cam feed from your computer or Mac?

Wyze Cam’s main advantage is that you can view feeds remotely via your smartphone. The company, therefore, manufactures devices that you can link to your smartphone and not necessarily a PC or Mac.

However, there are a few ways to watch the camera feed on your computer.

The first way is using the direct stream option via your browser or desktop media players such as VLC. The other is to create a smartphone environment on your computer and install a Wyze Cam mobile app.

Below, we will take a deeper look at each of these options of watching Wyze cam on your PC. Here is everything you will need, from the necessary setups to applications and software you should download.

Does Wyze have a desktop app?

Can you download a Wyze app for Mac or Windows instead of going through all these hassles of viewing the camera on a PC? No!

The Wyze Cam app is only available for Android and iOS mobile devices only. However, with a few tricks, you can easily connect your computer to your camera.

How to access Wyze Cam on a computer

Here are two solutions that can help you monitor your Wyze camera through your laptop:

1. Using direct stream

Direct stream is one of the best ways to access Wyze Cam on your computer. It simply lets you connect to the camera through a URL address.

To use direct stream, you need to enable the streaming feature (Real Time Streaming Protocol or RTSP) on your camera first. Follow these steps:

Download the Wyze Cam RTSP Firmware

Open it using a ZIP or RAR program and save it on a micro SD card in the main folder

Insert the SD card into the camera while it is unplugged

Plug the USB cable in the camera while pressing the setup button to activate the firmware. Release the button when a blue light comes on.

Allow the camera to reboot, then launch the Wyze Cam app on your phone

Go to Settings then Advanced Settings and turn on RTSP, then enter your Wyze Cam login details.

Tap on Generate URL to create a remote URL address

Now, you can monitor your camera remotely on any supported device. Technically, you can use the address to view the camera via your browser. However, the VLC media player offers the best functionality for streaming.

To view Wyze Cam via VLC media player:

Download the VLC app for your PC (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.)

Install and launch the app on your computer

On the VLC menu (top bar), select Media and scroll down to Open Network Stream.

Enter the camera’s URL address to start monitoring your premises.

2. Using smartphone emulators

The other way to watch Wyze Cam on your PC is using smartphone emulators. These are software applications that create a smartphone OS environment, allowing you to operate smartphone apps.

BlueStacks is one of the top smartphone OS emulators that are currently on the market. It is Android-based, meaning that it will enable you to run Android apps. You can install it on your Windows or Mac PC.

Below is a look at how to set up BlueStacks and your Wyze camera:

Download the BlueStacks software and install it on your PC (Note: the download file is pretty large and might take some time).

Install the app and launch it

In the BlueStacks dashboard, go to Google Play Store and log using your Google Account credentials

Search for and download the Wyze Cam app and install it. Alternatively, you can download the app APK for PC and install it directly on the BlueStacks environment.

Launch the Wyze Cam app and log in with your account details to start accessing the camera feed

One thing to note about smartphone emulators is that they are very resource-intensive. They will use a considerable percentage of your CPU, RAM, and Disk Space to run.

You will be running two operating systems, therefore, you need a fast and reliable PC. If not, the emulator will significantly slow down your computer or even cause it to hang.

Summary

While Wyze Cam is designed to be used with smartphones, the above solutions will help you to monitor your home or premises on your laptop or desktop PC.

Whether you are using an emulator or direct stream, you’ll enjoy a better viewing experience.

Wi-Fi home cameras have increased in popularity in recent times. These tiny and compact devices make a great addition to a home’s security system.

An excellent example of such a camera is the Wyze Cam. Wyze has a number of cameras including the Wyze Cam v3, Wyze Cam v1/v2 & Pan, Wyze Cam Outdoor, and Wyze Video Doorbell. Since they are wireless, the cameras require an internet connection to work properly.

So, can you use a Wyze Cam with Wi-Fi?

Wyze Cam can work with and without Wi-Fi. However, a wireless connection is necessary when viewing live streams, receiving notifications, and changing your camera settings in the Wyze app.

Wi-Fi is essential to configure and set up the camera when getting started. But after the configuration, you will have to insert a microSD card into the camera and turn Local recording to microSD card on to get started.

Once done, the camera will record events continuously and save the data into the SD card without Wi-Fi.

How to connect a Wyze camera to Wi-Fi

You can connect your Wyze camera to Wi-Fi using the following steps:

Download the Wyze app for Android or iOS.

Create a new account or sign in to your account.

Connect your phone to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and have your network password ready.

Plug the camera into a power outlet using the provided USB cable and power adapter.

The status light will turn solid yellow when powered.

If it starts flashing then, it is ready for setup. Here is what you should do:

Tap on Home in the Wyze app

Select the + (plus) sign on the top left

Tap on Add Device

Select Cameras, then Wyze Cam or Wyze Cam Pan

Tap on Next in the app, ensuring you have plugged the camera into an outlet

Pull the base from the camera and press SETUP on the bottom. It will say Ready to Connect

Check the box next to I heard, Ready to connect in the Wyze app and tap on Next

Select your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, and enter your password, and tap on Next

Scan the QR code on the Wyze app

Check the box next to I heard, QR code scanned in the Wyze app

Tap on Next

At this point, you will only have to set up a name for your device. Enter your preferred username in the text field provided. Once done, tap on Finish, and you are good to go.

Does Wyze camera use data?

If you live in a rural area and you do not have Wi-Fi, you can use mobile data or a hotspot to operate your Wyze Camera.

However, that means you will use lots of data to run the camera. Generally, it is challenging to determine how much data the camera will need.

The live stream video feature in a Wyze Cam uses 1-2 megabytes of data per minute in standard definition. In high-definition, that translates to about 4-7 megabytes per minute.

Since the numbers are only for streaming, you would have to determine the number of minutes or hours a day you are streaming video from the camera to know how much data you will require to operate it.

Does the Wyze base station have to stay connected to the router?

The Wyze base station requires a wired connection to a router during setup. You cannot set up the Base Station without a router. After the setup, you can switch to a Wi-Fi connection.

Once done, it must stay connected to the router because the outdoor cam cannot work without the base station. That is the primary reason the cams and base station come packaged together.

Can you view Wyze Cam remotely?

The Wyze Cam comes with a smartphone app that you can use to view a live video stream of your Cam from a remote location.

However, Wyze cam only works on Wi-Fi for remote access. That means you require an internet connection for this to work well.

To view the live stream:

Open the Wyze app

Tap on your Wyze Cam v1/v2 or Pan

Wait for your camera to load

Once it loads, you will view a live video stream of your Cam.

Conclusion

You can use your Wyze Cam with or without Wi-Fi. A wireless network is only necessary when live streaming, receiving notifications, and changing your camera settings.

Note that a Wyze cam connected without an internet connection can only work if you have a MicroSD card to record local events and save the data.

The Wi-Fi option is much better because it allows you to access your camera remotely using the Wyze app.
