How to clear fault codes on a Toyota forklift

Tim Vickers

Errors on your forklift can be a considerable inconvenience and quite annoying. Even if the forklift doesn’t stall because of the fault code, the blipping and beeping can be very distracting.

However, there are a few ways to clear the forklift codes. First, you can start by removing the battery for about 30 seconds. If this does not work, you can move on to maintenance rest.

Below, we have compiled everything you need to know about Toyota forklift error codes. This includes what causes the errors, what they mean, and how to erase them.

Various Toyota forklift fault codes and their meaning

Forklift fault codes occur whenever there is a malfunction or error in the system. They signal the need for maintenance and/or repairs.

Below are some of the most common Toyota Forklift fault codes and their meanings:

  • EC-1: unload solenoid open circuit or load short abnormally. The error causes the traveling and material handling to be enabled even after the driver has left the seat.
  • F1-1 and F2-1: the errors signal an OPS/SAS data reception error.
  • F4-1-8: CPU error. It causes the display on the forklift to become unstable.
  • H1-2 and H1-3: indicate an error with the lift lever potentiometer. It causes the lift to stop.
  • H2-1 and H2-2: indicate an error with the tilt lever potentiometer. It causes the tilting function to stop.
  • 01-01/01-02/01-03/01-04: signals a fuel feedback control error. It causes the engine speed to become unstable and may lead to the stopping of the forklift.
  • 01-05: signals to 02 sensor opening in an abnormal way. It causes the engine speed to be unstable, and the forklift might stop
  • 02-01 and 02-02: intake temperature sensor error. It may cause the engine to have problems when moving at low speeds.
  • 03-01 and 03-02: it indicates that there is an error with the engine pipe pressure sensor. It may lead to engine failure.
  • 05-01, 05-02, 05-03, 05-04, 05-05: These error codes point to a problem with the throttle position sensor. It can cause the forklift to limit the engine power output, leading to slower speeds of movement or material handling.

These are just some of the few Toyota Forklift error codes. There are many more fault codes available, which you can find in your forklift manual.

Here’s a list of the most common Toyota forklift error codes and how you can fix them. I have explained what each of those codes represents and the potential cause of the error.

How to check error codes on a Toyota forklift?

How do you know there is an error code on your forklift, and how do you check it? The fault code warnings are displayed on the dashboard display unit whenever there is an error, and the ignition switch is on.

Usually, three displays will help you know there is an error:

  • The wrench lamp (orange in color) coming on
  • The spanner light coming on and blinking
  • The error codes flash on the console – in some forklift models, the error code will also be displayed on the wrench lamp.

Once you see these three displays, you should immediately stop the forklift operation. After that, consult with your manual to discover what the error code means and the necessary troubleshooting, repairs, or maintenance to perform.

How to clear error codes on a Toyota forklift?

Here are two effective ways to clear Toyota forklift error codes:

1. Disconnecting the battery

Toyota forklift battery

Disconnecting the battery is one of the easiest ways of clearing Toyota forklift error codes. It causes the electronic control unit to reboot, which removes the code display.

Below is a look at how to do it:

  • Open the battery compartment on your forklift – usually found under the seat
  • Disconnect the battery terminals
  • Wait for about 30 seconds, then reconnect the terminals and close the compartment.
  • Turn the ignition switch on.

Once the ECU comes back on, the error code should clear.

2. Performing a maintenance reset

The other way to clear error codes on a Toyota Forklift is to perform a maintenance reset. Below is a look at how to do it.

To perform the reset, you will need to manipulate the buttons on the ECU display on the dashboard. There are four buttons, which can be hard buttons or touch screen buttons.

They are:

  • The button with an arrow pointing downwards – also known as the “A” button
  • The button with an arrow pointing to the left – the “B” button
  • Button with an arrow pointing to the right – the “C” button
  • The button with an enter sign – the “D” button

To perform a reset:

  • Press and hold both B and D buttons for about two seconds – you will hear two beeps immediately after pressing the buttons, and after 2 seconds have passed
  • Then, press the C button within 10 seconds of pressing the B and D buttons above.
  • Press the C button again within 10 seconds after pressing it. A short beep will sound
  • Again, within 10 seconds, press both the B and D buttons for two seconds (only releasing after hearing two beep sounds)
  • After the second beep sound, the administrator menu display will come on the screen
  • Using the A button, scroll down the menu until you locate “Maintenance HR” and select the reset option

How to reset the Toyota forklift cat code?

The maintenance reset procedure is quite different with some Toyota forklift models, such as with the CAT model. Below is how to perform a reset for this forklift:

  • Start the forklift key switch and wait exactly 3 seconds, then press the accelerator five times
  • Wait exactly 7 seconds, press in, and hold the accelerator for about 10 seconds. Wait until the malfunction indicator light comes on and starts blinking.
  • With the light blinking, release the accelerator pedal. The reset procedure will be completed, and you will clear any error codes.

Note: when clearing Toyota forklift codes, you must fix the underlying issue causing the code to appear first through repairs or maintenance. If not, the error code will still show.

If the issue has been fixed and the error code is still displaying, you might have a sensor problem, in which case you will need to have a technician fix the issue.

Conclusion

Having error codes come on in your Toyota forklift can be pretty confusing, especially if you don’t know what they mean.

However, with the above information, you can check and identify the error and clear them after the necessary maintenance and repairs have been performed.

If you are intimidated by the technical procedures, you can have your technician erase the codes after fixing the underlying issue(s).
